Vera Brittain was born 29 December 1893.
She was born in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, England.
She was the daughter of a well-to-do paper manufacture.
Her father was (Thomas) Arthur Brittain. He was the director of several family owned paper mills.
Her mother was Edith Mary (Bervon) Brittain. Edith was the daughter of an impoverished musician.
She attended boarding-school at St Monica's, Kingswood, Surrey.
